Real World Test

In 2008, Pella Cooperative Electric ran a side-by-side test to compare how much electricity each used.  A 50-Gallon Marathon water heater was paired against a 50-Gallon Ruud water heater.  Both units have a 4500 watt element and operated at 94% efficiency.  Both water heaters were placed in a 74°room, filled with cold water, and the thermostats were set to 140°Here are the results:

  • The Ruud brand got to temperature in abour two hours, using 9.5 kWH.
  • The Marathon brand got to temperature in about three and a half hours, using 5.2 kWh.

The water heaters were then left in the room over two days.  The thermostats were left at 140°.  Here are those results:

  • The Ruud brand maintained the water temperature using 18.8 kWh.
  • The Marathon brand maintained the water temperature using 8.4 kWh.

In short, the Ruud water heater was able to heat water quicker than the Marathon.  The Marathon water heater used less energy to both heat and maintain water temperature.
