What if I can't pay my bill on time?

If for any reason you are unable to make a payment by the due date, please contact the office.  We offer payment agreements and other arrangements, in accordinance with the cooperative's tarrif filed with, and approved by, the Iowa Utilities Board.

If you payment is not received by the due date, a 1.5% late penalty is assessed.  We will attempt to contact you numerous times to notify you before disconnection occurs:

  1. A Friendly Reminder is mailed the day after the due date.
  2. An automated phone call may be placed to the primary phone number on file.
  3. One day prior to disconnection, a notice will be placed on the door of the home as a final reminder.  The member is responsible for the expense of this trip.
  4. If payment has not been received, or acceptable arrangements made, disconnection of electric service may occur.

For more information, read "Avoiding Shut Off Of Electric Service for Nonpayment"  as lised in the Cooperative's tarrif or "Customer Rights and Responsibilities to Avoid Disconnection for Nonpayment"  as provided by the Iowa Utilities Board.

If you need assistance with your energy bills, contact your local community action agency.

Will I be charged extra if my account is disconnected?

  • Pella Cooperative Electric does not charge for disconnection of electric service.  However, if your account is being disconnected for non-payment, some charges may be incurred in the process.

  • Trip Charge - This charge is assessed when a cooperative staff member makes a trip to your home.  Trips for posting a disconnection notice, disconnection of service, and reconnecting of service may incur a trip charge.  This is $75.00 during normal office hours, and $185.00 after hours.

  • Deposit - If a deposit is not currently held on an account, or if it is not sufficient, one may be required after the account has been disconnected for non-payment.  The deposit is equal to the highest bill in the last twelve months.
